On this very special evening the Folklore
Centrum will celebrate the legendary Mississippi Fred McDowell with a screening of the film Shake ‘Em on Down: The Blues According to Fred McDowell and live music from Stockholm blues stalwarts Brian Kramer, Allen Finney and Felicia
Born in 1906, Mississippi Fred McDowell was a cotton picker and juke joint performer who was first recorded in 1959 by Izzy Young’s old friend Alan Lomax. Izzy would later organize a concert with McDowell
in New York City through the Friends of Old Time Music.
The one-hour documentary tells the story of McDowell’s life, which included travelling to Europe in the mid-1960s, mentoring Bonnie Raitt, having
one of his songs covered by the Rolling Stones and serving as the cornerstone of the unique and enduring North Mississippi Hill Country style of blues music.
on Down: The Blues According to Fred McDowell was made by Joe York and former Sweden resident Scott Barretta, who edited The Conscience of the Folk Revival: The Writings of Israel “Izzy” Young.
Scott, now residing in Mississippi, will present the film in person and the screening will be followed by a performance from Stockholm’s current blues legends Brian Kramer, Allen Finney and Felicia
Nielsen. Don’t miss this one folks!
